In ancient times inexplicable events were attributed to the actions of spirits, angels or demons. Traditionally, Saint Gabriel, the angel of the Annunciation, communicates God’s will to us. Through Saint Raphael we may experience God’s healing and guidance, and Saint Michael the Archangel offers us God’s protection.
These days that way of thinking has been given over to a more scientific view of cause and effect. But we still experience things for which there is no quick and easy “scientific” explanation. We still experience healing that defies our combined medical knowledge, we can still hear God speaking to us, if we are open to hear Him, in ways we cannot articulate. And we still experience God’s protection at times when no other rational explanation will suffice.
Perhaps we should not be so quick to dismiss the influence of God’s messengers in our lives.
This small original painting takes an iconographic approach to depicting Saint Michael. His attributes of arms and armor remind us of his role as protector. The halo reminds us of his sanctity, and the orb in his left hand reminds us that angels always direct our hearts and minds to Christ.
May Saint Michael the Archangel protect us from the snares and wickedness of the Adversary.
