St. Mark the Evangelist

St. Mark the Evangelist, as with all saints the halo represents the aura that emanates from holy persons. The dark stripe on his right shoulder is known as the pallium or the apostolikon and is shown only on those persons who have been sent on a mission, usually apostles. The candle symbolizes both the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and the light the Gospel brings to the world. The Gospel of Mark, here represented by the book, rests on palms in token of Mark’s martyrdom.
The lion is the traditional symbol associated with Mark and is a reference to the Gospel’s opening lines of “a lion in the wilderness.” The scroll reads “Peace be with you, Mark.”
